Geek Love Introduction

#LitGeeks invites you to join a community reading of…
Geek Love
by Katherine Dunn
July 25 – September 1, 2016
Katherine Dunn, the original Freakmother, makes muses of monstrosity in her 1989 masterpiece, about a bizarrely geek-inspired, traveling circus family, born of the stale kernels of boxing reports and advice columns—a celebration of human adaptability trans-parented into a thrilling tale of self-awakening for all the freaks!
What dormant mutant genius will Geek Love awaken in you?
Geek Love is our fourth book read together, and its themes are timely—cultish fervor, freaks, geeks, genetic engineering, sexual fetishism, Otherness versus Normality, the exaltation of the sacred and the profane. What’s not to love?
“They thought to use and shame me but I win out by nature, because a true freak cannot be made. A true freak must be born.”
—Katherine Dunn

Reading Schedule
Geek Love is a fun, entertaining read and we expect that many of you may consume it in just a few sittings.
However, we plan to take it slow and steady, yet keep up a certain level of intensity, reading at a pace of approximately 60 pages/week. This will give us time to thoroughly absorb and discuss the material on the Infinite Discussions forum, without bogging down.
Of course, you are free to read at your own pace! However, we will try to stick to the schedule for the purposes of discussion.
Community Hangouts
We will be discussing the book together on our discussion platform, Infinite Conversations, as well as a series of three live Google Hangouts, scheduled for:
- Thursday, July 28, 8pm EST/ 5pm PST – Hangout #1
- Thursday, August 11, 8pm EST/ 5pm PST – Hangout #2
- Thursday, August 25, 8pm EST/ 5pm PST – Hangout #3
Video archives of all hangouts will be posted to the Infinite Conversations forum and the #litgeeks blog.
Meet Your Hosts
Carmen Leilani De Jesus
meta-muse
Carmen Leilani is known for her ability to take the form of the Muse you need the most.
Adept at scenting, absorbing and honoring Shadows & Chaos as well as transmuting them into Order & Light like a Turbo Tonglen Machine. In her free time, she enjoys freezing eigenstates out of the Quanta and recreational ego annihilation (for HerSelf and Others).
Oliver C Rabinovitch
Restlessly seeking rest, Oliver is full of contradictions. After apprenticing in corporate propaganda in the early years of the 21st century he applied himself loosely to anti-corporate projects. Fascinated by the human capacity to reflect one another, Oliver is intensely himself and not, in dense successions. Finding a fluid path between homes, he slides between views, alongside allies and enemies, leveraging the psychotic with the sane. Today he finds himself co-oping with psychotomimetic patience in a virtual waiting room, abiding for any singular-hilarity to happenstance by.
As your resident #litgeeks, we aspire to serve a reading experience and conversation that deepens, enlightens, connects, and cultivates radical understanding. We look forward to reading with you!
